Additional Online Consumer Protection
Tips
1. Be careful not to make purchases on websites you are unfamiliar with
until you read the terms and saved the contact information.
Be sure to read and understand the website’s money-back guarantee,
terms of use, disclaimers and/or privacy policy. These should be easy
to locate usually on the bottom of the homepage.
2. Use good judgement. If a site seems suspicious spend more time researching
the company until you feel comfortable doing business with them. Also,
do not visit websites you find from junk email or spam. You should delete
any emails you do not recognize. If you are unsure of something, contact
the website by email or phone before you make a purchase or give out information.
There are plenty of legitimate web-businesses offering what you are searching
for. You can avoid scams simply by taking a little more effort and doing
some more research.
3. Be sure you only put your credit card information on a secure protected
page. On the page that requires you to type in your credit card, look
at the address bar at the top of the browser. A regular web page begins
with: "http://", whereas a secure page begins with: https://.
Look for the "s" in http. These are encrypted pages and used
for security of financial transactions online.
